Google旗下产品搜索服务原称「Google Product Search」,已沿用10年,用户只需输入产品关键词,除非用户指定特定模式,否则搜索结果不会默认任何模式排列出相关产品,零售商亦可免费显示他们的产品图片和信息。
 
服务将改称「Google Shopping」,限定零售商必须支付服务费用,才能显示产品信息;Google将按人气和价格为商品排序,产品广告亦将出现在主要搜索引擎上,并列明「赞助」一词。
 
鼓励零售商更新信息
 
Google产品管理副总裁Sameer Samat指,与零售商建立商业关系,可鼓励他们为产品更新信息,并为用户提供更好的购物搜索结果,同时零售商可换来更高质素的用户流量。
 
8年前,Google坚拒接受产品搜索服务为付费的商业服务,认为此举会对产品显示造成偏见及主观,免费搜索服务则会为用户建立信心;如今Google改变立场,或想藉今次转变增加收入,并拉近与对手之间的距离。
 
用户人数远逊eBay

分析指,Google或进一步削减其现有的免费服务,如搜索餐厅和商店等的「Google Places」;新模式亦令小型零售商难与大型零售商竞争。
 
尽管零售商将面临更高的宣传成本,但只要愿意付费,他们的产品可有更高曝光率;Google亦能集中管理零售商的产品显示内容,可谓相得益彰。
