在亚洲教书的最大好处就是，毕竟外教实际所赚得的足够付得起当地的生活支出。我的计划是在还完欠债后离开中国并辞职，于此同时存好了一些用于旅游的钱。
我之前所不知的是生活在中国会给我带来前所未有的机会——而且，甚至是一个全新的乐观的感觉，这种乐观引领我达到我之前未想到可能发生的个人和职业上的成功。
生活在中国的缺点
在我跟你解说在中国生活是如何积极的影响着我的生活之前，我应该跟你提个醒：生活在中国会有很多不爽之处。
在这些不爽之中第一点，一点也不令人意外的是，环境污染问题。当我在上海居住了8个月的时间之后，我的了支气管炎、严重的痤疮以及左下眼睑的损害，我每次闭上眼我都要去抓它。
另外，层出不穷的关于有毒食品的事件使本来就皮包骨头的我又瘦了10磅。我变得苍白，上海几乎没有地方我能够晒得到太阳，即使太阳正在天上挂着--我的感觉和我看起来的样子一样糟糕。
公平的说，生活在中国我从来没有感受到我的人权受到威胁。也就是说，大多数西方国家的媒体在中国被屏蔽的说法毫无疑问是可恶的。（这句话，好像是翻错了还是怎么，我都不敢相信）
偿还债务，存钱
尽管对我的健康有不良的影响，在中国教英语仍然帮助我达到了我移居中国的最初目标：还清信用卡债务以及存一些积蓄。
就如我之前所提到的，亚洲的英语教师挣的比生活所需要的多的多。对于我来说（这句话不知道确切的意思）我的收支最终是大约每月1800美刀的收入，以及700-800美刀的支出。
不论你是教英语还是在一家企业上班，生活在中国肯定能改善你的经济状况，如果，也就是说你愿意像中国本地人一样生活。
确实很多外国人移居中国后很关心他们的可支配收入有多少，他们像摇滚明星一样生活。西式的酒吧和餐馆对他们的商品和服务的定价也是相应的。
相比在上海码头的时髦地点或者奢侈的新天地用餐，我更倾向于在餐厅里来一碗面条和米饭。我很少饮酒，白色的出租车也相对的便宜，我总是乘坐每次只花大约2-3元（少于50美分）的公共汽车和地铁。
拓展职业发展机会
如果我仅仅在还清债务带着存下的几千美元就离开了中国，我可能只是感觉我的任务完成了。事实上我顺带带上了收入的来源离开中国。、
在我来到中国之后一个月，我给上海人杂志的编辑发了一封邮件（纽约Gothamist杂志的姐妹博客？）申请一个撰稿人的职位。虽然美国的出版社和网站因为我缺乏经验而完全不予考虑我的申请，上海IST给了我一个机会。
接下来的四月份，我做了更雄心壮志的尝试。其中之一就是去CNNGO网站，CNN.COM的一个子网站，是为了迎合生活在亚洲的外国人而设立的网站。我为CNNGO网站撰写了8篇文章，其中一些甚至出现在了CNN.com的主页上。
6月份的时候在紧张的争取上海自由新闻记者的机会时，我辞去了我教书的工作。我计划了一个去越南的两周旅行作为我持之以恒的奖励。
也算我运气好，使我高兴的新的原因之一是“自由职业者（对吗？）”我能够在世界任何能够联网的地方投稿（赚钱）。因此我去越南的旅游也成为了我长长环球旅行的起点，最终我回到了美国。
希望和改变
我能无债一身轻的回到美国，更多的积蓄，以及更加丰富的简历，我也比我离开美国时更加有前途。

因为我的上海的生活经历而出现的旅行计划激励我去开办我的网站，离开你每天生活的地方，…………（这里实在不知道要表达什么意思才好）。因此，我过上了一个3年前我无法想象的独立的，自由的生活。
但是在中国生活并没有使我变得更加有能力或者聪明--只是提醒我我已经有足够的能力和智慧去实现我的梦想。
